Blog

Photoshoots, press releases, regionals, and more!

After a delayed flight due to the snow in Prague, and horrendous traffic on the roads around Oxford I was running very late for an important event… One which would have a massive impact on my year ahead!!

After months of begging my friends, family and colleagues to support me in my quest to become one of the Petplan Brand Ambassadors for 2017; I could finally announce that I had been succesful.

I spent the next two days at the Unicorn Equestrian Centre near Cheltenham meeting my fellow ambassadors and the lovely team at Petplan Equine as well as their PR company JB Promotions. This also involved a video press release, being interviewed by local and regional magazines; and a fun photoshoot by the very talented Stephen Bartholomew.

I learnt so much from this experience and now here I am writing my own blog, on my website!

And so February was off to a flying start.Typically on my busiest weekend of the month I had come down with tonsillitis and flu… but this was not going to stop me from competing all three of my boys.

Nelson the superstar

Nelson was first to fly the flag as a Petplan Equine ‘Equine’ by competing at Coombelands Equestrian Centre in their Arena Eventing. He hadn’t been to a party since November, and was keen to be out again. Luckily he behaved himself and after a speedy round we bagged ourselves a second place. So pleased with the old chap!!

Finley was next up on the Sunday for yet another cross country schooling session. This time at Tweseldown Racecourse. We had such an amazing time jumping some of our trickiest combinations to date. He just proved how awesome he truly is.

Last but no means least was Ransom’s turn. We were competing in the British Dressage Regionals at Merrist Wood College. I was so pleased with his performance as he really tried his hardest; and this did reflect in his score. Sadly it seems he is no match for the younger, more extravagent horses; but saying this I feel I was marked fairly, and he certainly gets a 10/10 for commitment and obedience.

Ransom at Belmoredean

After this performance we headed back to Belmoredean for another crack at our PSG qualification. This time we ventured out in the later part of storm Doris. My previously supple and obedient dressage horse had decided to go rogue! His warm up was awful for both his Advanced Medium and Advanced tests; and his

flying changes became non existent! He also forgot how to perform his 3 and 4 time changes so I feared the worst.

Thank goodness for the amazing trot work and lateral canter work which gave me many 7,7.5, and 8’s and an rather astonishing score of 65.15% in the Advanced with a first place! We were also lucky enough to come 2nd in the Advanced Medium with a score just shy of 66%.

So although he smashed his PSG qualification and we are rearing to go I have decided we may need to re-educate ourselves at this level again before we attempt it in order to perfect our changes.

Georgina and Apple’s Double winning rosettes!

Between competing and training I found some time to support one of my pupils Georgina; at her third British Dressage competition. It was a freezing cold, windy morning at Pachesham Equestrian Centre, but luckily a succesful one with a double win! Georgina and Apple have now won six out of six of their Novice dressage competitions and we are now working towards Elementary.

That very same afternoon Finley and I competed in what would be our last competition before the eventing season begins. The Novice combined training at Coombelands. This turned out to be a very popular event, and he produced a lovely obedient dressage test producing a personal best at this level. The showjumping was a little ‘wild’ as he was having far too much of a good time which led to two poles down. This left us just outside the placings but overall I was thrilled with his performance.

January Blues and New Year New Goals

After a New Year in Yorkshire seeing in the end of 2017, I returned to the south and yet another wet start to the year.

Hoping that we would have a drier start to 2017 I was greatly mistaken. January proved to have me soaked through to the bone on many occasions, but I also had to battle with the frozen conditions that the great British weather through at us.

Being on the south downs has its many perks for great rides and fitness training, but being so high up also means that the yard stays frozen for a lot longer.

However training needed to continue with my plans for the year being big.

As always my main goal is to keep three happy healthy horses – adapting to their individual ‘special’ needs.

Nelson’s plan is to keep him ticking over. Competing occasionally and making sure he continues to be as cheeky as ever.

Ransom’s goal is to compete at the Petplan Area Festivals at PSG, as well as Advanced Medium. Neither of us have competed at this level before and it has been a huge learning curve getting here. We have to have qualifying scores at Advanced before obtaining two qualifying scores at PSG.

Lastly; Finley is aiming for a season of competing Novice. With his capability we may have a 1* in us for the end of the season but again; its not something I have ever done before and we will take each competition as it comes.

So our January training began with several sessions with Caroline Jeanne. She has been a huge help in getting Finley to where he is today after I started training with her last Summer. She has changed both of our techniques which has worked wonders.

These sessions involved course jumping, arena cross country; and lastly a trip to Littleton Manor Cross country course at the end of the month.

The ground was fantastic and considering this was our first cross country training session of the year Finley behaved very well and we tackled some of the bigger combinations including angled combinations and water jumps.

Finley at Felbridge in the Novice Combined Training

We also competed in our last combined training of the winter season at Felbridge Equestrian Centre. This had become a regular venue for us through the winter months and I would highly recommend it. It gave us the opportunity to run through some of the Novice dressage tests we would be up against this coming season; as well as jumping some decent 1.10m show jumping tracks.

Luckily our last trip there was a positive one – a lovely calm dressage test followed by a super clear!

Ransom at Belmoredean competing in the Advanced

Ransom also made his new year debut at Belmoredean as part of Step Aside Dressage. This was one of the many days of torrential rain; and as we were only competing in one test I decided to grit my teeth and crack on!

This was our first Advanced test in order to obtain our PSG qualification and Ransom did behave incredibly well despite the weather. Our tack was soaked and I was finding the reins incredibly slippery so it wasn’t as ‘together’ as I would of liked but he behaved and performed all the movements necessary.

We obtained our qualifying score as well as a first place; but I knew that we could perform it much better so I took a lot of positives from the day.

January ended with a trip away to Prague with my other half. It was a lovely mini break and we were lucky enough to have some snow. We visited some lovely sites and did a lot of walking, eating and drinking.

Whilst flying back to England I knew that what I had planned for later that day; and the following day would be the start of a very exciting 2017!
